a little lake norman history

View of Lake Norman, Lake Norman, NC. Photo by Gary Phelps Lake Norman is a man made lake primarily constructed for energy production and flood control of the Catawba River Valley. Located just north of Charlotte, Lake Norman is the largest of seven lakes built for this energy program.

The lake was filled up in the early to mid 60's and was originally the playground for sports minded campers and fishermen. As its beauty and popularity grew, it attracted sailboaters, water skiers and the relaxation of pontoon boaters. With the completion of I-77 between Statesville and Charlotte, Lake Norman was rapidly opened up to second homes on the water and the rush to develop residential communities around its shores.

Lake Norman was named for Norman Atwater Cocke, a retired president of Duke Power and has been dubbed "Our Inland Sea". Please help us keep it clean and safe for future generations.
